Power in instrumental Worship
- Gbemi Olaleye

Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute arzd harp! Praise Him with the timbrel and dance; Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes! Praise Him with loud cymbals; Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
(Ps 150:3-5)

I remember the time in this nation when the church considered the use of musical instrument an aberration. Looking back now, one gets vexed to even remember that a time like that ever existed.

One wonders if the church did not read the Bible which is full of scriptures on the use of musical instruments in the worship of the living God. The above Psalm mentions eight different types of instruments that are used in praising and worshipping God.

The fact that Satan manipulates the use of these equipments these days is not enough reason to abandon them. We must remember that worship began in heaven in the first instance and since Satan led the worship, one can then understand why he manipulates things. We praise God when we sing to Him his wonderful works, but God wants to hear the songs through the use of the instruments.

The psalmist says, "praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; Praise Him with the lute and harp!" The psalmist would have known over the time God's response when he uses the instruments. In other words, God does not just want us singing as that would limit the different variations and dimension in praise. It is in this trend that the psalmist counsels us to use the instrument of music in worship. In this way, God will hear His praise in different forms.

God would like to hear His praise through the sound that the trumpet produces. He would like to hear His praise through the lute and harp. God loves the timbrel dimension as well as the guitars and violins. When used at the appropriate time, He loves the loud cymbals and clashing cymbals. Our God is the God of variations and dimensions. We've got to appreciate the human instruments the Lord is using to worship and praise Him with these instruments.

Thank God for Brother Kunle Ajayi, Niyi Adams, Ibadan 's Kunle Ajayi, Mike Aremu and Tosin Odumosu. The list is endless. I was greatly excited the day I met a sister playing the saxophone so skillfully. Her name is Bukky Sax. She is a totally new dimension to instrumental praise. By her coming into the scene, God Has proved to His church and the world that women too can play the breath intensive musical instrument.
