Only Nigerian gospel musicians are expected to be listed here.
Gradual bastardisation of Gospel Music

Generally, the music scene in Nigeria has witnessed many developments with gospel music, which used to be limited to Church choir and strictly Christian community, becoming widely accepted by cross section of the people irrespective of their religious beliefs.

Unfortunately, like the massive proliferation of Churches, gospel music is gradually being bastardised by many self-acclaimed gospel musicians who have no sound spiritual background.

These days, it seems every musician wants to sing songs, not principally to win souls but to get the patronage of the people. Bad enough, most do not have the needed training to appreciate simple things like good lyrics and arrangement. As long as many can string together some popular choruses, they usually head for the studio. There appears to be more entertainment content in many of the gospel songs than passing across message capable of ministering to the listeners.

Another concern is the adoption of foreign lyrics and translating them to Nigerian languages. Many of these foreign songs, however, are at variance with the solemnity expected of gospel music.

Notwithstanding, gospel music in Nigeria has come of age and the practitioners are not doing badly. Such is the wide acceptance of gospel music that they are aired on secular radio and television stations. The name of God is really glorified by the increase in the number of gospel musicians. One can only look forward to necessary improvements.
