In Nigeria, we are not ready to accept the fact that other people can do things better than us. Why can't a singer leave composition to composers? Composition means composing songs with a rhythmic form which ordinary writer cannot do.
This problem is manifesting in the wretchedness of many composers who have composed great songs. This will continue until we have a brigade that will recognise the necessity of the separateness of the two groups.
“Journalists in Nigeria have a lot of work to do in this regard. Journalists should not allow their writings and judgment to be influenced. A lot of rubbish have been polished and published on the pages of newspapers so that when you see the videos on TV, you find it appalling and wonder why our media entertained it so beautifully. Many junks are selling not by the quality of the works but by publicity. So, until we get a controlling board that would bring sanity, things might continue this way.
“This situation is also responsible for the inability of many Nigerian artistes to feed on a single album. The Beatles are dead, but 10years ago I read that their royalty is about $19million. The group is dead but they are still living on royalties. A living artiste or group in Nigerian earns nothing.
“Another problem is that many artistes would not acknowledge other artistes when their songs are used. It led to a problem between Sonny Okosuns and I sometime ago. He used my song Si lekun ayo mi without my permission. I wrote the song in 1984 when I was in the Choir of the Methodist Church, Sogunle, Lagos. Primate Olabayo of Evangelical Church of Yahweh used to invite me to minister in songs in his church when Sonny Okosuns worshipped there. I am sure that was where he heard the song and went ahead to record it in his album.
I was watching one of the Mount Zion's films recently and the song was used for which I was paid no kobo. If it were to be in America, once your song is used, you are in money. The problem of enforcement is not as simple as you put it. When you seek to enforce your right, many people would be on you saying why must a gospel act take another gospel act to court. Some would see it as trivial and they will tell you to drop the matter. I must, however, confess that so many people are now conscious and are complaining about lack of originality.
"Another dimension to it is that those who have used such songs without permission may be one of the artistes that have passed through your hands or your friends who have merely taken you for granted. How do you deal with those ones?
